NATURAL RESERVE OF MONTERRICO

Monterrico, approximately, a two-hour trip from Guatemala City via an excellent road, is located on the south coast of Guatemala, extending a distance of 20 kms. It has an are of 2,800 hectares with five communities: El Pumpo, La Avellana, La Curvina, Agua Dulce and Monterrico. It is quite likely in the future the reserve will be extensively developed for eco-tourism as it is committed to the conservation, protection and reproduction of endangered species. The reserve contains native birds from the region, migratory birds, mangrove wetlands, iguanas, caimans, and sea turtles. In fact, of the eight species of turtles remaining in the world, three are protected inside this natural sanctuary.

There are two options in order to travel to Monterrico — either by going through the community of La Avellana or the community of Iztapa. Either way, to reach Monterrico you will eventually travel through Chiquimulilla Channel in a ferry, which also transport vehicles.
